Urban Tactics

A project undertaken during second year at University of Edinburgh to attempt to create an archive of an aspect of the urban fabric.

Given the field of ‘how buildings meet the ground‘, we sought to create an archive that evaded the ambiguous and subjective nature of the title and instead devise a system of values which could be quantified through relative assessment.

Once these value were assigned to each example, the archive was allowed to become self-organising by arranging the examples in the style of a deck of Top Trumps cards. Through playing and engaging with the archive, natural preferences were allowed to emerge and examples which displayed a richness in the assessment criteria gradually rose to the top and became recognised.
